Phillips Academy Addison Gallery of American Art Renovations and Roof Rehabilitation

Renovation of The Addison Gallery, constructed in 1931, a significant work of Charles Platt and one of the ensemble of Platt buildings which enclose the Great Lawn, the principal central campus space at Phillips Academy in Andover.  The renovation provided climate control systems, daylight control systems, security systems, storage facilities, new basement gallery spaces, and landscape improvements including a new Sculpture Court to link the Gallery to its companion Arts Building, coupled with a new accessible entrance.
By 2009 the Addison Gallery’s original glass roof—a signature aspect of the original 1931 Charles Platt design—had deteriorated and required replacement.  RO+A developed a solution to over-clad the existing glass roof with a new glass system, which creates a double wall to reduce heat within the glass roof, reduces overall energy cost, and provides the means to keep the original historic roof in place as temporary protection during construction, and provides a historic document of the original 1931 museum technology.  The project includes restoration of the roof drainage system, and the restoration of the limestone building cornice.
